Towards Tranquility with Liz

Hello I'm Liz

I am a Leeds based Therapist and Counselling Supervisor.

I am a visually impaired mum to 2 amazing children who have different needs and it was through wanting to have more capacity to meet their needs that I found a purpose outside of family life and a career in Counselling.  I was looking for a solution to feeling on high alert all the time, a way to manage difficult relationships, I wanted the feeling of being chronically stuck to go away.  I wanted a way through the loss, depression, discrimination and what I now know was past childhood traumas.

I had been looking for ways to help people and trained in a number of different holistic therapies but non alone fitted what I felt I was looking for.  A couple of friends suggested I would be good at Counselling and I joined a course at the same time as starting to volunteer for a Crisis Support Service.  For 7 years I supported young people and adults with high levels of risk from self harming to feeling suicidal within Leeds Survivor Led Crisis Service on their Crisis Helpline, face to face in Dial House as well as within Touchstone support Here for You Service.  I now work within Schools offering Counselling to young people and parents helping them to understand more about why they feel, behave and communicate in the way they do and build on the strengths they already have to move through their distress.

My life is still busy, filled with challenges but through having my own counselling I now have boundaries in place to help manage relationships better, and have built stronger connections.  I am able to communicate and be assertive not shut down or becoming defensive.  One of the most noticeable changes is that I am no longer on high alert all the time and daily life feels calmer, I can sleep and the most important thing is I am able to be there for my kids so much more than I was able to before.  I want these things for you too, which is one of the important reasons I became a therapist.

How I use my experience within sessions is by being curious about what is going on for you and what has happened to you, looking from different perspectives.  I allow space for mistakes because I know I am not perfect, and that is ok, you don't have to be perfect either and I won't judge you and I am open to feedback.  I treat everyone as a human being and approach everyone with a down to earth, compassionate, respectful and calm approach.

My aim is to be your trusted companion on your journey to answering those difficult questions which have probably kept you up at night, support you to understand why your struggling, build healthy helpful coping strategies, develop ways to prevent escalation of and manage intense emotions so that everyday life can feel calmer and when you look to find energy in your stores it there when needed.

Together we can work towards creating the change you want and need to feel differently to the way you do right now.  I know it is really scary being at the start of the journey but you won't be alone I want to be beside you and for you to build belief in yourself more and more, because I have faith you can create the change that's needed.  I know how it feels to be different and support children who feel different as well for lots of different reasons.  For this reason our sessions will be as unique as you.  They will go at your pace because you are in control of them.  They can be flexible and creative full of out of the box thinking and activities or calm and talkative.  I am open to looking at however the sessions needs to be to accommodate your needs.

My current hours of work are weekday evenings and Saturday mornings.  I support Young People and Adults experiencing a variety of struggles, as well as providing Supervision to other Counsellors.
